The Alvin Area Garden Tour was begun in the spring of 2000 to raise maintenance funds for the Marguerite
Rogers House Museum. The annual event was the brainchild of the seven-member AMS Steering Committee
responsible for restoring and refurbishing the Victorian cottage at ll3 E. Dumble St. in Alvin as the House Museum.
Each year, the grounds of the House Museum and of three or more public and/or private gardens are featured
during the one-day event. Gardens can be large or small, and some of them have been in Santa Fe and Manvel,
just east and west of Alvin, or in the Liverpool, Texas area south of Alvin.
There is always a plant sale out of the House Museum garage, and in some years vendors of patio/garden art, furniture, pottery, etc. rent booth space on the Museum grounds. AMS members donate some of the plants
for the sale, and blooming plants are brought in from nearby nurseries.
Hours are l0:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. on a Saturday in the middle of April. Members of AMS work two-hour shifts
to staff the plant sale and the ticket tables at each site, and to route visitors through the gardens.
Alvin Garden Club co-sponsors the event, and its members provide their expertise in answering questions
about plant names and growing tips at each of the gardens.
Publicity begins in March, when tickets with directions to the sites and flyers with maps are made
available at several places in Alvin during the month before the event. They are also available at
each of the tour sites on the day of the event.
The Spring 20l0 Tour is set for April l7. For further information about featured gardens and booth
rentals, call the Tour Chairman at 28l-393-l538.
